There are three campgrounds nestled into the woods, plus 30 cabins. We were headed to the park on a late Friday afternoon to go camping. Since this is a New York state park, you may want to consider whether an annual Empire Pass or even a Lifetime Empire Pass would be a good purchase for you. The entrance fee is $9 per vehicle (in 2021, collected from 4/1 until 10/31). This park has a lot going on: camping, 1500 feet of beach, a lake with kayak rentals, a bunch of picnic areas, a couple of playgrounds, a ball field, a boat launch and marina, and even a golf course. Fair Haven Beach State Parkįair Haven Beach State Park is right by the village of Fair Haven in the town of Sterling, Cayuga County. I’ll walk you through some of our experience. We came after the high season, but even so the little village of Fair Haven had some nice dining options, and we even got lucky with the weather. The expansive views of Lake Ontario in the park and from the campsite made us feel like we were by the ocean. I’d heard lots of good things about Fair Haven Beach State Park, and we really wanted to see some wide-open water. And not only because we realized we have a real, great beach not even two hours from our house! TLDR: It was a bit of a $%^! show but totally worth it. Cycle the Redbill Manna Gum Woodland Ride and see koalas, shorebirds, saltmarsh and Redbill Creek. Climb to the Pinnacles Lookout along the West Coast Wetlands Walking Track, passing spring wildflowers and diverse birdlife to be rewarded with excellent views of Phillip Island, Western Port and the west coast wetlands. Take the Fairhaven Northern Beach walk to see shorebirds and migratory waders along the saltmarsh and Fairhaven Beach. A number of walks and cycleways lead from Fairhaven Campground. As you're walking east from the Tankerton Jetty, keep an eye out for a koala or local birdlife, including Purple Moorhen, Swamp Harriers or Cape Barren Geese. The General Store is approximately 7.5km away. Fairhaven Campground can only be accessed by walking tracks. Campers can utilise campground facilities such as picnic tables, shelter and the BBQ whilst enjoying the beautiful scenery. Due to the highly combustible vegetation of the island, no open fires are permitted at any time, so a portable gas stove, or similar, is essential for cooking. Only basic toilet facilities and water supplies (purify or boil first) are provided. The campground is 5km from the Tankerton Jetty on the west coast foreshore, with space for up to 40 people amongst the 10 campsites. Set up your tent at Fairhaven Campground to stay a while beside the sea and appreciate the idyllic natural surrounds of French Island National Park. This camp has basic amenities, and is approximately 5km walk from Tankerton Jetty, and 7.5km from the general store. Stay in the secluded beauty of this seaside natural haven. Fairhaven Campground is located in the dunes behind the beach, on the western coast of French Island National Park.
